The Hopje has been a Dutch favorite ever since its development in the late 18th Century. After being advised by his doctor to abstain from coffee, Hendrik baron Hop ordered his baker Theodorus van Haaren to invent a sweet with coffee flavoring. After some experimentation, van Haaren created a candy made of coffee, caramel, cream and butter.
